Modelling mortality and migration as functions of age using PIT tagging data

چکیده

In fi shery applications of tag-recovery models, recovery probabilities are typically parameterised in terms of instantaneous rates of mortality, where the mortality rate can be a function of the size or age of a fi sh. For age-dependent tag-recovery models, past work on Pacifi c halibut used a fi xedage approach, in which the age of each fi sh was fi xed at the same value for each halibut of a given length. In this work, we examined age-dependent tag-recovery models that allow for variability in ages. The age of tagged halibut can only be determined for recovered tagged animals, and when modelling data from the International Pacifi c Halibut Commission’s passive-integrated transponder (PIT) tagging study on Pacifi c halibut, we used auxiliary information from the annual setline surveys to model the age of un-aged fi sh. Both Bayesian and multiple imputation methods were examined. The former appeared to suffer from problems with parameter identifi ability, and ultimately, only the latter was applied to the PIT tag data. The results showed large differences in both mortality and migration rate estimates between models that allowed for variability in age and those that fi xed age at a constant value for a given length.

Application of artificial neural network and genetic algorithm to modelling the groundwater inflow to an advancing open pit mine

In this study, a hybrid intelligent model has been designed to predict groundwater inflow to a mine pit during its advance. Novel hybrid method coupling artificial neural network (ANN) with genetic algorithm (GA) called ANN-GA, was utilised. Ratios of pit depth to aquifer thickness, pit bottom radius to its top radius, inverse of pit advance time and the hydraulic head (HH) in the observation w...

Mortality and Long-Term Retention of Passive Integrated Transponder Tags by Spring Chinook Salmon

—I monitored long-term mortality and retention rates of passive integrated transponder (PIT) tags for 145,000 juvenile spring chinook salmon Oncorhynchus tshawytscha tagged as part of a large-scale tagging project. A total of 325 PIT tagged mortalities were collected during the 28-d study. Mortalities were collected, on average, 11 d after tagging, indicating that direct mortality due to taggin...

The effect of PIT tags on growth and physiology of age-0 cultured Eurasian perch Perca fluÕiatilis of variable size

For many biological reasons, it is often necessary to tag and monitor fish from a very early age. However, tagging can adversely affect fish, especially for high tag to body weight ratios. To Ž . determine the minimum size for passive integrated transponders PIT tagging in juvenile perch Ž Perca fluÕiatilis, surgical implantation was evaluated in fish ranging from 1.67 to 10.62 g 55–96 . mm FL ...

Part of speech tagging (POS tagging) is an ongoing research in natural language processing (NLP) applications. The process of classifying words into their parts of speech and labeling them accordingly is known as part-of-speech tagging, POS-tagging, or simply tagging. Parts of speech are also known as word classes or lexical categories. The purpose of POS tagging is determining the grammatical ...

Ultrasound Evaluation of Spinal Cord in Newborns with Sacral Pit

Background: Sacral pit is a shallow or deep dimple in the lower sacral region, with a reported prevalence of 3-5% among newborns. The aim of the present study was to investigate spinal cord abnormalities in newborns with sacral pit via ultrasound examinations. Methods: In this descriptive study, 3071 infants born at 34-42 weeks of gestation were studied in hospitals affiliated to Islamic Azad U...
